QB Lee to leave Florida State

editor1  |Jan 14,2008

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- After failing to live up to
expectations, Florida State quarterback Xavier Lee is leaving
the program.

The Orlando Sentinel reported on its web site Monday that Lee
will not return to Florida State next year for his senior
season.

Lee's father, Willie, told the newspaper that his son decided to
leave Florida State when offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher
asked him to move to tight end.

"Can't blame him, man," Willie Lee told the newspaper. "What
else is he going to do - sit around there and watch other kids
go ahead of him?"

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has yet to comment on Lee's
departure.

Willie Lee said his son is hoping to receive an invitation to
next month's NFL scouting combine.

Xavier Lee arrived at Florida State in 2004 as a highly touted
recruit out of Daytona Beach's Seabreeze High School, but
started only six games for the Seminoles in a disappointing
career.

After beginning this season as Drew Weatherford's backup, Lee
came off the bench to lead Florida State to a 21-14 win over
Alabama on September 29.

Lee started Florida State's next three games but was benched
again after committing four turnovers in a 37-29 defeat to Miami
on October 20.

He later was suspended two games for missing too many classes
and did not accompany the team to its Music City Bowl contest
against Kentucky.

Lee's mother, Gloria, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was
"heartbroken" over the situation.

"As a single parent, I'm pretty much upset, heartbroken, because
of the situation they put him in and how they mistreated him
over the years," she said.
