KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Tennessee tight end Brandon
Warren has been cleared by the NCAA to play this season, the
school announced Tuesday.
The ruling ended a prolonged saga surrounding Warren, who
enjoyed an outstanding 2006 season as a freshman at Florida
State but left the program due to a personal matter.
Although Florida State refused to grant Warren a release, he
left Tallahassee anyway and spent last year at a community
college in Knoxville.
That left the decision up to the NCAA, which approved Warren's
waiver request on Tuesday morning.
"I just want to thank the coaching staff for going out on a limb
for me and understanding the circumstances I have been in and
obstacles I have had to go through," Warren said. "I also thank
the university and the NCAA for giving me this chance."
Warren had 28 catches for 301 yards and one touchdown with the
Seminoles in 2006. The 6-2, 220-pounder should provide an
offensive boost this season for the 18th-ranked Volunteers, who
currently are without injured starting tight end Jeff Cottam.
"I'm really excited for Brandon," Tennessee head coach Phillip
Fulmer said. "I appreciate his hard work while he has been here
getting his academics in order.
"I also appreciate the work of our compliance staff and the
Southeastern Conference, and the wisdom of the NCAA staff of
approving this for a quality young man. The whole system is
about helping student-athletes be successful, and it's good to
see they are making that happen."
