Vanderbilt surges to 14th in coach poll

editor1  |Oct 05,2008

MCLEAN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Fresh off one of the program's
biggest wins since World War II, Vanderbilt climbed five spots
to No. 14 in the latest USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday.

The Commodores defeated Auburn, 14-13, on Saturday to improve to
5-0 for the first time since 1943. They are now the only
remaining unbeaten team in the East Division of the Southeastern
Conference.

"I don't know where this one ranks," Vanderbilt coach Bobby
Johnson said. "We'll gather all of that information up at the
end of the season, and see how we do. We still have a lot of
work. We can improve in so many ways and we're going to try and
get better."

Unlike two weeks ago, there were no major upsets in the top 10,
resulting in little change at the top of the poll. Oklahoma
(5-0), which routed Baylor, 49-17, solidified its hold on the
top spot, collecting 60 of 61 first-place votes and 1,524 points
from a nationwide panel of coaches.

Missouri (5-0) and Louisiana State (5-0) switched places, with
the former climbing to second and the latter dropping one spot
to third. Missouri collected 1,404 points - six more than LSU,
which garnered the final first-place vote.

Completing the top 10 are Alabama (6-0), Texas (5-0), Penn State
(6-0), Texas Tech (5-0), Brigham Young (5-0), Southern
California (3-1) and Georgia (4-1).

Ohio State (5-1), which may have kept alive its title hopes with
a last-minute 20-17 at Wisconsin, starts the second 10, followed
by Florida (4-1), Utah (6-0), Vanderbilt and Kansas (4-1).

The week's big losers were South Florida (5-1), Auburn (4-2) and
Wisconsin (3-2). South Florida, which was upset by Pittsburgh,
fell 10 spots to No. 20, Auburn dropped nine slots to No. 23
and Wisconsin slipped seven notches to No. 24.

The poll featured a pair of two newcomers from the Big Ten
Conference - once-beaten Michigan State (5-1), which jumped to
19th, and unbeaten Northwestern (5-0), which debuted at No. 22.
The Wildcats, who were off last week, are 5-0 for the first time
since 1962.

No. 16 Boise State (4-0), No. 17 Oklahoma State (5-0) and No. 18
Virginia Tech (5-1) moved up, with Michigan State and South
Florida completing the top 20.

Completing the poll are Wake Forest (3-1), Northwestern, Auburn,
Wisconsin and California (4-1). The Golden Bears also were
ranked 25th after winning their first two games.

Dropping out were No. 20 Oregon, No. 21 Fresno State and No. 23
Connecticut.
