Love Letter To The PAC-10

James Sheldon  |Sep 01,2007
Dear PAC-10 Fans,

A man lie motionless on the field, and leave it to the Cal fans to start chanting "PAC-10 Foot-Ball." Pure class! After you youngsters graduate from this institution that is rumored to be academically prestigious, check out Philadelphia for job and life opportunities. You'll find that at Eagles games it's highly encouraged to cheer loudly in such a disrespectful manner while an opponent lie motionless on the field. Berekely...Brotherly Love...sounds the same to me. Ultimately, I couldn't believe so many people showed up to the game! Wasn't there an anti-war protest or tree hugging event already scheduled for September 1st? (Wait, no, those events are next weekend: Sponsored by whomever happens to be the world's current top and trendiest sandal maker.)

For the rest of the PAC-10 zealots: Is there really that much of a chip on your shoulder? I'll tell you this, PAC-10 fans, you can have all the offense in the world, but if you can't stop people from scoring, you're no better than second best! Ever. You simply can't outscore everyone all the time – just ask Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. Fortunately for Cal, Tennessee had no offensive deep threats to stretch the field. However, they still found a way to stay in the game. Hmmm? Lack of defense in the PAC-10? To say the least, both Cal and Tennessee are better than their pre-season rankings, but neither team will win their respective conference.

And if I were a PAC-10 conference foe, or especially a member of the Nebraska squad in the Big XII, USC is looking far from the invincible force they've been predicted to be. Best defense in college football? The upcoming weeks will tell the tale, but regardless of what the score said in week one, Idaho had no problem moving the ball against the Trojans.

Bottom line, PAC-10 fans, a few good years of conference play doesn't constitute a claim to being the toughest conference in college football. After Oregon, Cal and Washington graduate their top players (most likely not to degrees, rather the NFL draft) in 2007-2008, the PAC-10 is back to being what it is best at: Scoring a lot of points...and giving up a lot of points.

Sincerely,

The SEC
