Wolverines Drop a Mallet on the Irish Wolverines Crush the Irish 38-0 The Michigan Wolverines crushed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 38-0 at the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI on Saturday. Senior running back Mike Hart had guaranteed a victory earlier in the week. Living up to his word, Hart carried the Wolverines, accumulating 187 yards on 35 rushes and two touchdowns. Promising freshman quarterback Ryan Mallet connected on three scores through the air. Mallet spread the wealth to receivers Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington and Greg Matthews.
The Michigan defense was equally impressive, shutting out the Irish and tormenting highly touted freshman quarterback Jimmy Clausen for the entire game. The Wolverines sacked Clausen seven times and held the Irish to -6 yards rushing. Notre Dame has failed to score an offensive touchdown this season.
Head coach Charlie Weis had to fend off reporters at the post-game press conference, deflecting questions about why his program has fallen off so quickly. The Irish have started 0-3 for only second time in school history. Ouch.
The reality is the Irish aren’t very good and will continue to struggle offensively. The offensive line can’t block and with the exception of tight end John Carlsen, the team lacks any reliable offensive weapons. Throw in a freshman quarterback and you have a recipe for disaster. The tough times will no doubt serve as a good learning lesson for Clausen, who will surely develop into a solid signal caller in the years to come.
Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr felt the joy of victory for the first time this season. The Wolverines suffered a devastating 39-7 defeat to the Oregon Ducks, a week after their shocking 34-32 upset loss to Appalachian State in the season opener. The Wolverines have historically struggled against spread offenses and mobile quarterbacks.
Thankfully, Notre Dame was on the schedule this week to help the team improve to 1-2. Carr and the Wolverines will open up Big Ten conference play at home next week against Joe Paterno and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Senior quarterback Chad Henne (leg) is unlikely to play next week, which means young gunslinger Mallet will get his second consecutive start. Fans in Ann Arbor hope the team can build off this week’s performance and turn their season around.
As for the Irish, there’s always next year.
