Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Profile The Cowboys have always had some of the best coaches in the history of the NFL. Tom Landry is a Hall of Fame coach and Jimmy Johnson won numerous Super Bowls and is a main stay in the heart and minds of Dallas fans everywhere. Bill Parcells will surely be a first ballot Hall of Famer in the coming years but Phillips is a different breed of coach. He is a player's coach something the Cowboys have not had since Johnson and Barry Switzer back in the 1990's. Phillips has a sound head coaching record spending time with the Saints, Broncos, Bills and Falcons. Phillips stepped away from head coaching in 2003 and became the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Charges. Phillips helped construct what is one of the best 3-4 defense today and will bring this exact philosophy with him to Big D. Phillips beat out Norv Turner and up and coming coach Ron Rivera of the Chicago Bears for the head seat in Dallas. Dallas owner Jerry Jones stated that Phillips was his guy from the start of the off-season and feels that he is the best fit to help get the Cowboys back into the Super Bowl. Dallas Cowboys Off-Season Moves The Dallas Cowboys had a quiet off-season but ended up landing some fresh talent in both free agency and the draft that will help push this team even close to the big game in Arizona this January. Dallas started the off-season by acquiring the former University of Texas and Arizona Cardinal offensive linemen, Leonard Davis. Davis will provide an immediate impact to the offensive line while adding veteran leadership. Dallas also acquired veteran Brad Johnson to further help Garrett groom Romo, Johnson is also a great back up quarterback in case anything happens to Romo. The Cowboys also bolstered their secondary with the signing of former hard- hitting Seattle Seahawk safety, Ken Hamlin. Look for Hamlin to help Roy Williams in coverage, allowing Williams more time to play around the line of scrimmage. Dallas drafted Anthony Spencer, DE/OLB from Purdue to help fill some pass rushing gaps as well as anchoring the 3-4 defensive scheme. Spencer is a natural pass rusher who knows how to play in the 3-4 and should be an a great fit, seeing a lot of playing time coming out of the gates for Phillips. Dallas Cowboys 2007-08 Season Outlook Everyone remembers how the Dallas Cowboys seasoned ended, everyone except Tony Romo. The young, talented quarterback says he as no ill feelings regarding his muffed hold of the game winning field goal attempt last year in the playoffs. Romo has added in recent interviews that he has essentially, wiped that play from his memory and is ready to move on. Romo is entering training camp as the number one quarterback and planned starter for opening day. Dallas is also under new leadership as Wade Phillips brings his love of the 3-4 defense to the Lone Star State. Romo and Phillips have reportedly hit it off and my Cowboy insider has repeatedly advised me that this year's Cowboy team will be better than last year's. How can we forget about Terrell Owens, we can't? Last year, Dallas was constantly in a media frenzy and TO was always in the middle of the spotlight. Owens finger- Owens publicist- Owens and Parcells, I often wondered when the soap opera was going to end. This year I expect a toned down version of TO's soap opera, I expect him to behave, at least while the Cowboys are winning. It's a new season and Dallas has new life and leadership. Wade Phillips is a proven winner and knows how to manage a 3-4 defensive system-- Phillip's 3-4 will focus on getting to the quarterback more. Phillips will also approach Romo and Owens differently than Parcells did. Look for Phillips to allow this killer tandem to play their game a bit more, moving Owens all over the field finding miss matches. Dallas's defense should improve under Phillips, the 3-4 guru but what we can also count on is an improved Tony Romo and Dallas offense. Romo, Owens and Terry Glenn will be in-synch from the get go and much more consistent throughout the year and the running back by coalition of Marion Barber and Julius Jones will continue to improve behind an improved offensive line. Dallas will also use former Cowboy quarterback Jason Garrett to groom Romo this year. This personal attention will help the young star come into his own this year and is something he really did not get a lot of last season under Parcells. Dallas Cowboys Trivia To help stock their initial roster in 1960, the Cowboys were granted 36 players in an expansion draft of veterans from the other 12 NFL teams. However there were few impact players among them. The Cowboys first training camp was at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, in 1960. The Cowboys averaged 21,417 fans for six home dates at the Cotton Bowl in their expansion season of 1960. Emmitt Smith's 37 yard TD burst against the Vikings in the 1996 Wild Card playoffs is the longest scoring run in the Cowboys postseason history. The Cowboys have never returned a kickoff for a TD in the postseason. Rod Hill's 89 yard runback against Green Bay in 1982 is the closet they have ever come. Emmitt Smith's best rushing day in the postseason was 150 yard game against Green Bay in 1995 Championship Game that helped propel Dallas to victory, 38-27. The most prolific receiving performance in the Cowboys postseason history was the 192 yard game by Michael Irvin against the 49ers in the 1994 NFC Title game. Cowboys linebacker Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson won millions in a Texas lottery drawing in 2000. With 102 yards against the Green Bay Packers in the 1966 NFL Championship Game, Frank Clarke became the first 100 yard pass catcher in the Cowboys Postseason history. Bob Lilly was the first Cowboy player inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A referendum to build a new stadium for the Cowboys passed with 55% of the vote in Arlington, Texas, in 2004. Officials hoped to build a venue that could seat as many as 90,000 fans. Safety Darren Woodson was credited with a club-record 1,350 tackles in his 12 season with the Cowboys. Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher gained 17,162 of his 18,355 career rushing yards while with the Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys have 28 seasons in the playoffs (counting this year), one more than the Rams for most in the league history. When QB Troy Aikman retired following the 2000 season, he held or shared 47 club passing records. Though Bob Hayes retired in 1974, the late speedster still holds the club's all-time record with 71 career TD catches. Emmitt Smith became the NFL's all-time leading rusher in a game against Seattle in 2002. Smith's 11-yard run in the 4th quarter lifted him past Walter Payton and into the top slot on the league's career list. Emmitt Smith rushed for at least 1,000 yards all but his first and last seasons with the Cowboys. From late om the 1990 season until a Christmas Eve game at New Orleans in 1999, the Cowboys played beofore sellout crowds at every game--home and away. Troy Aikman won 90 games as the Cowboys starting QB in the 1990's. Thats more than any other NFL QB has won in any other decade. Dallas Cowboys – Texas Stadium Construction Began: 1967 Opened: October 24, 1971 Capacity: 65,675 Location: Irving, TX Surface: FieldTurf Home to the Dallas Cowboys for more nearly 40 years, Texas Stadium is in the twilight of hosting “America's Team.” After the 2007 season, the Cowboys will be moving to their new home, and the future of Texas Stadium has yet to be determined. When constructed in the late 1960s, it was truly unique in design, making it one of the NFL's first “partially domed” structures. The roof helps keep spectators dry, yet allows the field to experience all the elements of nature. Regardless of age, the stadium is no stranger to modern amenities, offering nearly 400 luxury suites, DiamondVision score and video boards, restaurants, club areas – everything a fan would expect from a team owned by Jerry Jones. |
