Green Bay Packers Team History
The Green Bay Packers are one of the oldest and most venerated franchises in professional sports. Founded in 1919 by Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun, the Packers have built a history of success that makes them the envy of many other professional teams. The winner of the first two Super Bowls, the Green Bay Packers’ legacy is one that includes legendary coach Vince Lombardi, Hall of Famers Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor and Ray Nitschke. 1950 saw one of the defining moments in the history of the franchise when the team was financed through the sale of stock throughout Wisconsin making the Green Bay Packers the only team in America owned by their community. This relationship has created one of the most loyal fan bases in the NFL. Under coach Vince Lombardi, the Green Bay Packers became one of the most storied franchises in all of organized sports history. The legacy of coach Lombardi and the Packers of the late 1950s and 1960s is now stamped across the most prestigious award offered to a team in the NFL - the Vince Lombardi Trophy - offered to each season's Super Bowl winner. The tropy received the name in 1970, after the death of the coaching legend. During the years following the departure of Vince Lombardi, the Green Bay Packers organization struggled to offer fans anything reminscent of their glorified past results. For nearly 25 years, the Packers failed make consistent playoff runs, only posting 5 winning seasons and two playoff appearances between the years of 1968 and 1991. They played musical coaches, attempting to turn former Packer greats into great head coaches - the results, considering the potential, were incredibly disappointing. It all changed in 1992 when General Manager, Ron Wolf, hired San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator, Mike Holmgren, to take over the head coaching duties. In that same year, the Packers went to Atlanta and snagged a young QB by the name of Brett Favre for a future first round draft pick. During the '92 season, Brett Farve would step in for an injured Don Majkowski and lead the Packers to their first win of the season. Favre would start the next game for the Packers, and has yet to miss a start through 15 NFL seasons as the Green Bay Packers #1 QB. Green Bay Packers Memorable Moments The Green Bay Packers, led by head coach Vince Lombardi, won Super Bowl I, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10.
A special bond between organization and fan was created when the team became a publicly owned commodity.
After the death of Vince Lombardi in 1970, the Super Bowl trophy was renamed in his honor.
The Packers of the modern era have appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one vs. the New England Patriots in 1996 (Super Bowl XXXI)
Brett Favre has shattered many records in his tenure as the Green Bay Packers starting QB. He has started every game since he was plugged in for injured Don Majkowski in 1992.
