Houston Texans HISTORY

Houston Texans Team History

The Houston Texans entered the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team. The Texans were assigned to the AFC South division. The team was placed in the same division as the Tennessee Titans, formerly the Houston Oilers. The Texans play their home games at Reliant Stadium. The franchise has yet have a winning season or make a playoff appearance.

Dom Capers was the Texans head coach from 2002-2005 before Gary Kubiak took over in 2006. The franchise received a lot of scrutiny and deservedly so after passing up on Reggie Bush and Vince Young in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Texans selected defensive end Mario Williams with the first overall pick. The team determined that David Carr was their quarterback of the future and passed on Young, a Houston native and fan favorite. Young led the Tennessee Titans to an overtime victory over Houston in 2006. Carr was subsequently released. Fans of the Texans will always wonder about what could have been.

The Texans defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-6 in 2002 despite only gaining 47 total yards, setting an NFL record for the least amount of gained yards in a victory.

The Texans drafted Mario Williams with the first pick instead of Reggie Bush or hometown favorite Vince Young.
