Houston Texans Head Coach Profile Gary Kubiak was named head coach of the Houston Texans on January 26, 2006. Kubiak was extremely successful as the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 1995-2005. The Broncos won two Super Bowls with Kubiak running the offense. Kubiak also won a Super Bowl as quarterbacks coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 1994. Kubiak played in the NFL for the Denver Broncos from 1983-1991, serving as a backup to legendary quarterback John Elway. The Houston Texans finished with a 6-10 record in his first season. The additions of Schaub and Green should make the Texans a lot better in 2007. As a coordinator, Kubiak has proven that he has the ability to light up the scoreboard. He must now demonstrate that he can lead a team to the playoffs. Houston Texans Off-Season Moves The Houston Texans are starting over at quarterback. The team acquired Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons to be the starting quarterback. The Texans released David Carr the following day. Five-time Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green signed a free agent contract to join Schaub in the backfield. On defense, the club added veteran linebackers Shawn Barber and Danny Clark. Both should provide leadership and experience. Veteran defensive tackle Jeff Zgonina was signed to shore up the middle. The offseason moves made by the Texans should improve the team’s prospects for 2007. Houston Texans 2006-07 Season Outlook The Houston Texans should be a much improved football team this season. The team will be showcasing new starters at quarterback and running back. The team acquired QB Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons. Schaub replaces former number one pick David Carr under center. Joining Schaub in the backfield is perennial Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green.
The offensive line needs to keep Schaub upright. If they can, the Texans offense should move the ball more consistently with Schaub at the helm. The Houston Texans defense must put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Mario Williams had 4.5 sacks in his rookie season. Fellow rookie DeMeco Ryans was a solid performer at linebacker last season. Incoming rookie defensive tackle Amobi Okoye should bolster the defensive line. Cornerback Dunta Robinson leads the secondary. Despite the offseason additions, the Houston Texans will probably not make the playoff this season. The Indianapolis Colts remain the kings of the AFC South while Jacksonville and Tennessee are playoff caliber teams. Houston Texans TriviaThe first points in franchise history were scored by Billy Miller. The Texans are the only NFL team to never win a divisional championship or finish better than third place in their division. The Texans have yet to make a playoff appearance. The Texans have not played a Monday Night game in their history. The Texans had two players make the Pro Bowl in their first season, tying them with the 1961 Minnesota Vikings. Aaron Glenn and Gary Walker represented the Texans in the Pro Bowl. Houston Texans – Reliant Stadium Construction Began: March 2000 Opened: September 8, 2002 Capacity: 69,500 Location: Houston, TX Surface: Natural Grass After the city continually rejected the construction of a new stadium, they eventually lost their Houston Oilers to Nashville, TN, due to the poor playing conditions of the Astrodome. They were on record as some of the worst playing field conditions in the history of the NFL, and the league was so discouraged, a new Houston franchise wasn't consider until a new facility was under construction. Reliant Energy bought the naming rights, and current enjoys the stamp on this retractable roof stadium that plays host to Houston Texans as well as multiple rodeo events on an annual basis. There's not a bad seat in the house, and when temperatures or weather might interfere with optimal playing conditions, the two sectioned roof meets in the middle to create the contemporary dome. |
