Jacksonville Jaguars HISTORY

Jacksonville Jaguars Team History

The Jacksonville Jaguars are entering their twelfth season in the NFL. The team holds the record as the fastest expansion team to make a playoff appearance, achieving the feat in their second season. The Jags have played in one AFC Championship game losing to the New England Patriots.

Quarterback Mark Brunell and receiver Jimmy Smith quickly distinguished themselves as top original Jaguars. Brunell went on to play in three Pro Bowls as a Jag, including winning game MVP honors in 1997. Smith finished his career seventh in NFL history with 862 catches and eleventh in overall receiving with 12,287 yards. The five-time Pro Bowler also rates as the Jags all-time leading receiver with 67 career touchdowns and seven straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards receiving.

In December of 1998, the Jaguars won the AFC Central Division title, becoming the first NFL expansion team to advance to the playoffs in three of their first four seasons. The next year, the Jags finished the regular season at 14-2, establishing a franchise best mark. In 2000, the Jacksonville blasted the Miami Dolphins 62-7 in a first-round playoff game, which proved to be the last NFL games for both Dan Marino and Jimmy Johnson.

In recent years, the Jags have returned to a more run-and-grind type offense. Behind the tailback tandem of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville boasts one of the more potent ground attacks in all the league. Quarterback David Garrard helps keep the ship study, extending his still current interceptionless streak to at least 19 games.
