Super Bowl V

Baltimore Colts vs. Dallas Cowboys

Date: January 17, 1971
Host City: Miami, FL
Stadium: Miami Orange Bowl
National Anthem: Tommy Loy (Trumpet)
Halftime Entertainment: Southeast Missouri State College Marching Band with Anita Bryant
MVP: Chuck Howley – Linebacker, Dallas Cowboys
Final Score: Baltimore-16 Dallas-13

Often referred to as the “Blunder Bowl,” Super Bowl V was a game filled with turnovers, sloppy play, numerous penalties and an MVP award going to a linebacker on the losing team. Super Bowl V was also the first Super Bowl to be played after the completed merger between the AFL and NFL. The Colts had been an NFL team along with the Cowboys, yet when the leagues were combined, they were divided into two conferences. Former AFL teams became the AFC, with the addition of three NFL teams to offer symmetry to the league. An aging Johnny Unitas would get the start for the Colts, yet he was unable to finish the game due to injury. After backup Earl Morrall led the Colts back from a 4th quarter deficit, rookie kicker Jim O'Brien would knock through a 32-yard FG with 9 seconds left to win the game.
