Super Bowl XL Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks Date: February 5, 2006 Host City: Detroit, MI Stadium: Ford Field National Anthem: Aaron Neville, Aretha Franklin, Dr. John (ASL performed by Angela LaGuardia) Halftime Entertainment: The Rolling Stones MVP: Hines Ward – Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers Final Score: Pittsburgh-21 Seattle-10 The 6th and final seed in the AFC playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers put together a playoff run led by their “Blitzburgh” defense, and solid offensive play from 2nd year QB, Ben Roethlisberger. Although they were the 6th seed in the AFC, they were still part of the dominant conference and thus favored by 4 points in the game. Seattle came into the game well prepared, and got off to a quick start, putting the first 3 points on the board; however, they would struggle with mental errors, including penalties and dropped passes, that would plague them throughout the contest. After 3 quarters, the game was still tight at 14-10 Pittsburgh, yet the continued excellent play from WR Hines Ward would march the Steelers back into the end zone on a 43 yard TD reception, putting the icing on the cake and an MVP award into the hands of Ward – he would finish the game with 5 catches for 123 yards and a TD. Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of Super Bowl XL, was the retirement announcement made by Detroit native and Pittsburgh favorite Jerome Bettis: “I think the Bus' last stop is here in Detroit.” Check out the summaries of Super Bowl XXXIX and Super Bowl XLI.
