Super Bowl XVI began with a 49er flurry, as the team led by a young Joe Montana jumped out to a 20-0 lead by halftime. The San Francisco defense forced 5 turnovers in the first half, and the offense was ready and able to capitalize. The second half would offer a reversal of fortune, as Cincinnati was bound and determined to make a game of what was also their first Super Bowl appearance. They scored three second half touchdowns to San Francisco's two field goals, making the score 21-26 with an opportunity for an onside kick. The sure hands of the 49ers TE Dwight Clark gathered the onside attempt, securing the victory for the NFL's soon-to-be dynasty, the San Francisco 49ers. Joe Montana ran and threw for a TD, earning him the Super Bowl MVP – the first of many post season awards in his career. Check out the summaries for Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVII.
