Super Bowl XXXI Green Bay Packers vs. New England Patriots Date: January 26, 1997 Host City: New Orleans, LA Stadium: Louisiana Superdome National Anthem: Luther Vandross Halftime Entertainment: James Brown, ZZ Top, The Blues Brothers MVP: Desmond Howard – Special Teams, Green Bay Packers Final Score: Green Bay-35 New England-21 The odds makers had the Packers as 14 point favorites in the 1997 Super Bowl XXXI Championship, and that was one nail they hit squarely on the head. If you would have asked how those 14 points would have come, there would have been few that would have put their money on a series of big plays. Of Green Bay's 4 TDs, 3 were plays of over 50 yards, while the short gain went to the legs of QB Brett Favre on a two-yard scamper. Desmond Howard would thrash the New England Patriots special teams with a total of 244 return yards – one coming in the form of a 99 yard kick off return for a TD. Favre finished the evening with 246 yards passing with 2 TDs, yet Howard's spectacular special teams play earned him MVP honors. Check out the summaries for Super Bowl XXX and Super Bowl XXXII.
