Tennessee Titans Head Coach Profile

Head coach Jeff Fisher returns for his twelfth year leading the Tennessee Titans; he holds the franchise mark for games won, with just over one hundred victories (102). Fisher has performed solidly as head coach while in Tennessee, leading the Titans to four playoffs and two division titles, as well as an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. Fisher is primarily known as a defensive specialist, having served as defensive coordinator and a defensive backs coach in previous posts with the Oilers, the San Francisco 49ers, the St. Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles .

Tennessee Titans Off-Season Moves

The Tennessee Titans have enacted measures to counteract the likely season-long absence of Adam Jones, namely the signing of cornerback Kelly Herndon from the Seattle Seahawks. Other notable losses include wide receivers Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade, running back Travis Henry and tight end Erron Kinney, among others.

The biggest criticism is the deplorable condition of the receiving group surrounding Vince Young. David Givens steps into the wide receiver position, but it remains to be seen how healthy his knee is and what that may take away from his performance on the field, if he is even healthy enough to start the season. The Tennessee Titans used their draft picks to further remedy this situation, picking up Paul Williams, Joel Filani and Chris Davis. An attempt to snatch up Keyshawn Johnson from the media ranks failed, as Johnson took up a post at ESPN.

To bolster a weak defensive unit, the Tennessee Titans picked up cornerback Nick Harper from Indianapolis and safety Michael Griffin with their first draft pick. The biggest off-season move yet may have to do with the scale that LenDale White is standing on, as the second year running back showed up to camp several pounds over his playing weight – not entirely inspiring as he looks to have his chance to take over the number one spot left clear by Travis Henry’s departure.

Tennessee Titans 2007-08 Season Outlook

Last season’s 0-3 start with quarterback Kerry Collins was soon mended as Rookie of the Year standout Vince Young stepped up and ran the Tennessee Titans season record to an 8-8 finish. Somewhere in there, however, a bright spot for fans to cling to as Young led the team on a six-game win streak. The Tennessee Titans offense surrounding Young was near the bottom of the NFL in terms of both total yards per game and passing yards. This might make things difficult for Young in the coming season. The combination of Young and running back Travis Henry that led to many victories last season is a thing of the past, with Henry moving on to the Denver Broncos, and Drew Bennett, the Tennessee Titans top receiver, now in St. Louis.

It remains to be seen if their replacements, notably rookie running back Chris Henry joined by receiver David Givens, will be able to push the Tennessee Titans beyond last year’s mark. Huge doubts surround Givens, who is coming off of a serious injury to his knee last season, set to fill in the number one receiver position. Critics point to the serious lack of skill position players absent from the Tennessee Titans – leaving Young no real options in the offense. Last but not least, the suspension of Adam “Pacman” Jones will surely be a factor; the Titans might gladly do without the controversy, but will definitely miss the cornerback’s defensive prowess and his punt return ability on special teams.

Edging past their 8-8 season record last year may prove tough to do given the lack of total offensive fire power and a still unimpressive defense. With the stiff competition in the AFC South, even a slight improvement might not matter much at all for the Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee Titans Trivia

Bud Adams, the original “Houston Oiler,” is the only owner the Tennessee Titans Franchise has ever had.

The team was not supposed to move to Tennessee until 1998, but attendance was so bad in 1996 that  Houston let Adams out of his lease a year early. This created problems as the new stadium was not ready yet and the team had to play its first season in Memphis and its second at Vanderbilt University.

Bud Adams refused to relinquish the rights to the name “Houston Oilers” in order to protect the long history of the Tennessee Titans franchise. As a result, when Houston got a replacement NFL franchise they were forced to choose a new name, settling on the
Houston Texans.

Tennessee Titans – LP Field

Construction Began: 1997
Opened: September 12, 1999
Capacity: 68,798
Location: Nashville, TN
Surface: Natural Grass

LP Field, originally known as Adelphia Coliseum, and being renamed The Coliseum before LP bought the naming rights to the facility, has been home to the Tennessee Titans for nearly 10 years. When the franchise came from Houston, they simply changed the team name to the Tennessee Oilers while the franchise underwent one of the most interesting transitions in NFL history. LP Field was planned, yet not yet constructed when the team came to town, so the Tennessee Oilers played their first season in Memphis at the Liberty Bowl. Things took shape when one of the finest stadiums in the NFL was completed, and the squad took on their new name of the Tennessee Titans.
