SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback
Alex Smith suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder and was
downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's season opener against the
Arizona Cardinals.
Head coach Mike Nolan said Smith was added to the injury report
after he was hurt in practice Friday. Smith is expected to
visited renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who
operated on him in December.
"Alex Smith sustained a non-contact injury to his surgically
repaired right shoulder," Nolan said. "He will be consulting
with his surgeon in Birmingham for treatment recommendations.
At this time, there are no specifics to the injury or a
timetable."
Smith missed the final seven games of the 2007 with a separated
shoulder and underwent surgery in December.
The No. 1 overall pick in 2005, Smith was beaten out for the
starting job in training camp by J.T. O'Sullivan. He was
designated as the backup, but Shaun Hill will fill that role for
the opener.
After a dismal rookie season in which he threw one touchdown
pass and 11 interceptions, Smith improved dramatically in his
second second, throwing for 16 scoring passes and 16 picks.
But he regressed last season, as did San Francisco's entire
offense, managing two TD passes and four interceptions before
suffering the shoulder injury in Week 10.
