DENVER (Ticker) - Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, according to a published
report.
The Rocky Mountain News on Thursday said Cutler was diagnosed
with the disease in recent weeks, but the team is confident they
can successfully manage his health.
Citing team sources, the newspaper said the team's medical staff
is prepared to deal with the treatment of the 25-year-old
Cutler, who has the most serious form of the disease.
In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, which
is needed to convert food into energy. Patients are required to
receive daily insulin injections.
In addition to the daily insulin shots, Cutler will be required
to closely monitor his diet and blood sugar levels. According
to the Rocky Mountain News, former Broncos defensive end Mike
Sinclair played with the disease during his career.
The Denver Post reported that the team was aware of Cutler's
diagnosis before last weekend's NFL draft but felt secure enough
in the treatment to not draft a quarterback.
Wade Wilson, a quarterback who played for 17 seasons in the NFL,
also had Type 1 diabetes.
The No. 11 overall pick of the Broncos in 2006, Cutler threw for
3,497 yards and 20 touchdowns last season, starting all 16
games. As a rookie, he assumed the starting position for the
final five games.
Several high-profile athletes have had successful careers with
Type 1 diabetes, including Jackie Robinson, Olympic swimmer Gary
Hall Jr., hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke, former world
heavyweight boxing champion James "Buster" Douglas, former
Oakland Raiders player and coach Art Shell and golfers Scott
Verplank and Michelle McGann.
