Dolphins sign OL McKinney

editor1  |May 19,2008

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Dolphins continued to re-tool their
offensive line Monday, signing veteran offensive lineman Steve
McKinney.

Terms were not disclosed.

McKinney's first 10 NFL seasons were split between the
Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans. The 32-year-old missed
all but three games for the Texans last season after suffering a
torn left ACL.

Originally a fourth-round draft choice of Indianapolis in 1998,
McKinney played four years with the Colts before signing with
Houston as an unrestricted free agent in 2002.

McKinney played center in Houston but also can start at left
guard, which would allow the Dolphins to slide Justin Smiley to
his more natural position on the right side.

"It's a good fit for me," McKinney told the Miami Herald. "I
like the organization. I like the coaches. I like the guys
they brought in, and I feel like it's a place where I'm going to
have a real chance to play."

Initially, the Dolphins were considering using Smiley on the
left side to provide Jake Long, the top pick in the draft, with
a veteran presence.

That role can now be handled by McKinney, even though rookie
Shawn Murphy is still expected to compete for the starting job.

In his 10 NFL seasons, McKinney has appeared in 143 regular
season games, including 133 starts.
