Garcia threatening to skip workouts

editor1  |May 14,2008

TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback
Jeff Garcia is unhappy with his contract situation and
threatening to boycott the team's voluntary workouts this week.

With one year remaining on a contract that will pay him $2
million in 2008, Garcia has asked the Buccaneers for an
extension.

"There might come a time when I have to stand up," he told the
Tampa Tribune on Tuesday. "I hate to do that, to jeopardize my
teammates, because they're out here and I don't want to let them
down in any way.

"But at some point, you just want to see the respect from up top
be given."

According to the Tribune, Garcia wants to be rewarded after
helping lead the Buccaneers to the NFC South Division title last
season in his first year with the team.

The newspaper reported that Garcia is believed to be asking for
a revision in his contract that will increase his 2008 salary to
$7 million, the average for an NFL starting quarterback.

Garcia said a meeting between his agent and the Buccaneers
scheduled for last Friday was cancelled by the team and he has
no idea when negotiations will resume.

"I've never held out before," Garcia said. "But there is a
business side to this, and that's something that at some point
has to be handled, and you want to be appreciated in that
sense."
