EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New York Giants
added depth to their already talented defensive line Monday,
signing veteran defensive end Renaldo Wynn.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but The Star-Ledger of
Newark reported that Wynn agreed to a one-year deal at
unspecified financial terms.
Wynn's agent, Peter J. Schaffer, did not comment on the contract
when contacted by PA SportsTicker.
Wynn, 33, provides experience to a pass rush which already
features star defensive ends Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and
Justin Tuck along with linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka - a converted
end.
But the Giants have some depth issues at defensive tackle, a
position Wynn could fill on passing downs.
"(Wynn's versatility) is very valuable," said Giants head coach
Tom Coughlin, who coached Wynn while the two were with the
Jacksonville Jaguars. "Renaldo can play the run on first and
second down he doesn't have to come in only on pass downs. He
played inside last year, so he can defend against the run."
Strahan, 36, has been mulling retirement throughout the
offseason but still has not announced whether he will return to
the reigning Super Bowl champion Giants.
"We always like to add defensive linemen," Giants general
manager Jerry Reese said. "We're still not sure what Michael is
going to do as far as retirement goes.
"If Michael does retire it gives us a veteran who can play end
and tackle. It gives us more veteran depth, instead of having
too many young guys."
A 1997 first-round draft selection, Wynn appeared in 12 games
with the New Orleans Saints last season, recording 13 tackles
and 3 1/2 sacks. The 296-pound Chicago native has 25 career
sacks in parts of 11 seasons with the Saints, Washington
Redskins and Jaguars.
The Giants made another roster move Monday, placing linebacker
Keith O'Neil on their reserve-retired list.
