Jaguars WR Porter to miss start of training camp

editor1  |Jul 18,2008

FLINT, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver
Jerry Porter is expected to miss part of training camp because
of a hamstring injury that hasn't healed, according to a
published report on Friday.

A report from the ABC affiliate in Flint stated that Porter
originally suffered the injury toward the end of an offseason
practice in May and has been slow to heal.

Porter said earlier this spring he wasn't going to rush back
from the injury because hamstring problems tend to linger but he
is expected to recover in time for the start of the regular
season.

However, NFL Network reported later Friday that he required
surgery on the hamstring, leaving his status for the September 7
season-opening game at Tennessee in some doubt.

Signed during the offseason as a free agent to a six-year, $30.4
million contract with the Jaguars after eight up-and-down
seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Porter was being counted to
upgrade a receiver corps that did not feature one player with
more than 45 receptions or 629 receiving yards last season.

Porter's injury marks the second offseason hit Jacksonville has
taken at the position after former first-round pick Matt Jones
was arrested last week and charged with felony drug possession
in Arkansas.

Porter played 16 games for the Raiders last season, catching 44
passes for 705 yards and six touchdowns. In his career, he has
tallied 284 receptions for 3,939 yards and 30 TDs.
