CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bears on Tuesday signed
linebacker Brian Urlacher to a one-year extension that keeps him
under contract through 2012.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Chicago Tribune
reported that Urlacher, 30, received a $6 million signing bonus
and a $1 million raise over each of the next four seasons. The
extension comes one day before the Bears open training camp.
Urlacher, 30, had four years and $25.5 million remaining on a
nine-year, $57 million signed in 2003. He had threatened to sit
out camp if his contract was not restructured.
A six-time Pro Bowler, Urlacher started all 16 games in 2007
despite back and neck pain that required minor offseason
surgery. It was the third straight season and the sixth time in
his eight-year career that he played in every game.
Last season, Urlacher recorded five sacks and a career-high
seven takeaways with five interceptions and two fumble
recoveries. Since 2006, he leads all NFL linebackers in
interceptions with eight.
