Porcher gets community service

editor1  |May 05,2008

DETROIT (Ticker) -- Former Detroit Lions defensive end Robert
Porcher on Monday was sentenced to 50 hours of community service
and a year of probation after pleading no contest to assaulting
his former wife.

The sentence was handed down by Bloomfield Hills District Judge
Kimberly Small, who noted that Porcher's children witnessed the
assault on December 10 at a medical office in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan.

Porcher, 38, who retired in 2004 after 13 seasons with the
Lions, apologized for his actions in the court.

"I accept full responsibility," Porcher said. "I will do
whatever the court feels is necessary. I just want to be able
to put this behind me."

According to the Detroit Free Press, Small sentenced Porcher, a
first-time offender, to 90 days in jail but will suspend the
sentence during his probationary period.

If Porcher successfully completes the probation, the conviction
will be stricken from his record.

"We're not going to treat him any better than anyone else, but
we're not going to treat him any worse, either," prosecutor Jeff
Butler told the newspaper.
