Raiders sign S Archuleta

editor1  |Aug 12,2008

NAPA, California (Ticker) - The Oakland Raiders on Monday
bolstered their defense by signing veteran safety Adam
Archuleta.

The Contra Costa Times reported Archuleta signed a one-year
contract for $730,000 - but it will include a switch of
positions.

A safety since he entered the league as a first-round pick of
the St. Louis Rams in 2001, Archuleta will be moved to
linebacker, according to the newspaper.

"I played inside the box my whole career in the NFL ... being
down there with the big boys is really nothing new to me,"
Archuleta told the Times after his first practice Monday night.

Known as a ferocious hitter, the 30-year-old Archuleta spent
last season with the Chicago Bears and the previous one with the
Washington Redskins after playing in St. Louis his first five
seasons.

Archuleta has been a part-time player the past two seasons,
seeing his playing time reduced dramatically as the season went
on.

In 103 career games, he has recorded 530 tackles, four
interceptions and 18 sacks.
