OWINGS MILLS, Maryland (Ticker) - The pressure on rookie
quarterback Joe Flacco just went up a notch.
Two days after Flacco was named the starter, the Ravens placed
veteran quarterback Kyle Boller on season-ending injured
reserve.
Boller, who lost the starting job to Troy Smith late last
season, again was battling for the No. 1 quarterback role with
Smith until he was sidelined with a shoulder injury on August
16.
The Ravens on Wednesday signed journeyman Todd Bouman, who
likely will serve as Flacco's backup in the season opener since
Smith remains sidelined with infected tonsils.
A first-round pick of the Ravens in 2003, Boller started 42
career games for Baltimore. Taking over the starting job for an
injured Steve McNair, he threw nine touchdown passes and 10
interceptions last season.
Boller, who signed a one-year contract in the offseason and
likely has played his last game in Baltimore, has 45 career
touchdowns and 44 interceptions with the Ravens.
Bouman last played in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in
2005. He also has spent time with Minnesota, Green Bay and
Jacksonville, completing 129-of-230 passes for 1,683 yards, 11
touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
