ASHBURN, Virginia (Ticker) -- The Washington Redskins on Tuesday
acquired defensive end Erasmus James from the Minnesota Vikings
for a 2009 conditional seventh-round draft pick.
The Vikings waived the oft-injured James on Friday after he
failed a physical.
After playing in 15 games during his rookie season, James - the
18th overall pick of the 2005 draft - has been sidelined the
following two campaigns by season-ending knee injuries.
A former Wisconsin star, James had the knee operated on three
times since tearing his ACL and spraining his medial collateral
ligament in Week Two of the 2006 season.
"We really liked Erasmus coming out of college" Redskins
executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato
said. "He is young, talented and has a great deal of potential.
We like the fact that his defensive line coach at the University
of Wisconsin, John Palermo, is our current defensive line
coach."
The 25-year-old James recorded 31 solo tackles, five sacks and a
forced fumble in his career.
Also on Tuesday, the Redskins released defensive end Dorian
Smith.
