Steroids dealer meets with NFL officials

editor1  |May 22,2008

DALLAS (Ticker) - A convicted steroids dealer met with NFL
security officials Wednesday and supplied the names of players
who bought steroids from him, according to a report on the web
site of the Dallas Morning News.

David Jacobs of Plano, Texas, met with NFL security three weeks
after he was sentenced on May 1 to three years' probation for
running an international steroids ring.

Hank Hockeimer, the attorney for Jacobs, said while his client
named names to the NFL, he would not divulge them publicly.

"My view is that as long as the league is investigating this,
we're not going to comment on any names provided," Hockeimer
told the newspaper.

One name that has been made public by Jacobs in recent weeks,
according to the Dallas Morning News, is that of offensive
lineman Matt Lehr.

Jacobs accused Lehr of buying large quantities of banned
substances. Lehr has since signed with the New Orleans Saints,
but was a member of the Atlanta Falcons when Jacobs levied his
charges.

Lehr, who formerly played for the Dallas Cowboys, was suspended
for four games in October 2006 for violating the league's
substance abuse policy while with the Falcons.

Paul Coggins, the attorney for Lehr, told the newspaper he was
not aware of Wednesday's meeting between the league and Jacobs.

"Matt's playing in the NFL next year, and for many years to
come," Coggins said.

Hockeimer told the newspaper that Jacobs provided evidence of
steroid use by players both past and present during Wednesday's
meeting.

"The general topic was his knowledge of steroid and human growth
hormone use by current and former players," Hockeimer told the
newspaper. "They were thorough in their questioning. David
provided them with documents corroborating what he was telling
them."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to comment on Wednesday's
meeting, and would not address whether any players will be
sanctioned. Aiello added that the league is not paying Jacobs
for any information.
