5 Things I Hate About Pre-Season

Jim Derwin  |Aug 20,2007

I would like to hereby declare my hatred for the atrocity that is the NFL Pre-Season.  Why, you might ask?  Allow me to explain:

  1. Stars get hurt:  Do you remember last season when the Redskins were hoping this was the year they finally made it back to the Super Bowl, only to see their franchise Running Back, Clinton Portis, go down with a dislocated shoulder?  That ruined any chance of the Redskins getting off to a solid start and I was officially put on the local “Suicide Watch List.”
  2. Lack of Excitement:  We get to see the real starters play for maybe six downs, then are forced to watch gun slingers like Brian St. Pierre.  Oh, I’m sorry.  Does my snoring bother you?
  3. Bryant Gumbel:  Sure he’s one hell of an investigative sports reporter, but what business does this guy have announcing games?  Especially when you pair him up with arguably the best football analyst out there in Chris Collinsworth.  It’s like teaming Shaq with Steve Nash in a free throw shooting instructional DVD.
  4. Random Game Times:  One of my favorite things about the NFL season is knowing that at 10am and 1pm PST on Sunday, there are games on.  Consistency is very important to me.  During the pre-season, you could be flipping channels on Wednesday night and stumble upon a game.  Hello?  Had I known a game was on Wednesday I would’ve alerted Papa John’s to be on stand by to get a couple larges to my doorstep.
  5. Not Long Enough for Some Teams:  If a team goes out and hires a new head coach, or offensive/defensive coordinator, these teams should have a longer pre-season.  Six weeks is clearly not long enough for most of these teams to fully learn a new system and it usually takes them until the fourth or fifth week to grasp it.
That rant aside, it’s August after one of the most boring summers as it related to sports in recent memory, and the football season is in sight.  In a couple weeks, us Football.com guys are going to have our fantasy draft, which is always one of the best nights of the year.  A couple weeks after that, you get the long Labor Day weekend, then finally Week 1 is upon us and everything is right with the world again.  For another 22 weeks, anyway.
