Benson adds to legal woes

J J Pesavento  |Jun 08,2008

Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson once again apparently has found a way to put himself in a bad position with his employer.

According to the Associated Press, Benson was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in downtown Austin, Texas early Saturday morning.

Police pulled Benson over after allegedly running a red light and arrested him after he reportedly failed field sobriety tests. He refused to take blood or breath tests following his arrest.

Benson, who was released on bond later Saturday morning, contends that he was not intoxicated and did not run a red light.

The arrest comes a month after Benson was arrested on a lake near Austin on charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

At this point, one would think that Bears GM Jerry Angelo is of the opinion that it is just too conicidental for Benson to be having yet another run-in with the law for an alcohol related incident.

And you can bet the NFL feels the same way and the powers that be are keeping a close eye on another player whose name has been popping up too often in the crime blotter of late.

So now the Bears may need to make a decision whether or not to roll the dice with Benson, who seems to have become a lightning rod for legal problems, or cut their losses and send him packing.

While it may cost them financially, it's not as though there are no options available when it comes to replacing  Benson.

Veteran Shaun Alexander may be pushing 31, but he has enough left in the tank to help the Bears until second-round pick Matt Forte is ready to be the workhorse for them.

And LaMont Jordan has been informed that he is no longer part of the master plan out in Oakland and the Raiders have given his agent permission to seek a trade.

The decision to dump Benson may be a tough one for the Bears. But there seems to be a pattern developing with him and he does the team no good if he is a distraction, or if he gets disciplined by the league at some point in the future for his conduct off the field.

Add into the mix the fact that Jerry Angelo is probably still having nightmares about the Tank Johnson fiasco, and Benson may have fallen through the thin ice he was on with his boss.
