Calvin Who?

Calvin Who?
8 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown. Typical rookie numbers? I think not. And the Kansas City fans sing, “Calvin who, ha who ha who...” For college football fans, nobody is surprised at the impact play of Kansas City Chiefs, rookie wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. At this point, Chiefs fans have to feel like they scored the steal of the draft! Yet, imagine if Eddie Kennison hadn't needed any time off for an injury...it's always interesting how stories develop and from where they begin.

Yes, it's true. Dwayne Bowe was struggling with dropped balls during his college career at LSU, only to find that he couldn't see. Not only could he not see the ball, he couldn't see much at all – not clearly. Nothing a quick visit to an ophthalmologist wouldn't fix. A little LASIK surgery, and Bowe put together a final collegiate season to suggest that he could contribute to an NFL squad.

As the 23rd overall pick in the 2007 draft, Chiefs fans were more curious about their first rounder than anything else. Could this kid play immediately, and if he could, who would be throwing him the ball? Four weeks into the season, those questions are apparently answered, the Chiefs are sitting atop the AFC West standings and looking like they've got some serious potential for improvement. I, for one, must admit that I thought the Chiefs would have been on the list of “defeated” teams after 4 weeks. I also thought that Dwayne Bowe's talent would be wasted as a 3rd down receiver; however, thanks to this rookie, the Chiefs are enjoying something that they haven't had in most recent memory – offensive balance.

Even with game a manager such as Damon Huard at quarterback, the Chiefs have to be respected as a team that can move the ball through the air. It's clearly done as timely connections as opposed to slinging at will, but it seems to be reopening the can of whoop known as Larry Johnson. The more comfortable Dwayne Bowe feels in this offensive set, it's apparent that Huard only needs to get the ball close – Bowe can bring it in. Against San Diego, Bowe played like a veteran – using his body to create space for his hands, going across the middle and elevating for balls that would have many receivers looking over their shoulders. Once that threat is respected – zip...touchdown, Tony Gonzalez.

When Eddie Kennison returns to the line up, the Chiefs will add a serious vertical threat to this new offensive juggernaut led by...Damon Huard!? Wait, what? Seriously? The playoff bound Chiefs? The defense certainly looks up to the challenge if the offense can control the ball for sustained drives, and who can argue that with this new found balance it's not possible? From week 1 to week 4, Kansas City is the most improved team in the league, and with weapons like LJ, Tony Gonzalez, Dwayne Bowe and Eddie Kennison, they will possess the most underrated, overall offensive threat in the league and will compete for the AFC West!

And it all began with an injury. The #3 receiver becomes #2, and due to raw, play making ability, quickly becomes #1. But I'm not surprised. Congrats Chiefs fans, you got a good one.

  1. It was great to see Tony Gonzalez get that record TD catch... he is definitely deserving of an exclusive.
