Coming This Year in Washington...DEFENSE! Still MIA... OFFENSE!

Jim Derwin  |Aug 18,2007

Hell yeah.  It looks like the Skins’ D is going back to its dominating ways.  If the pre-season game with Tennessee was any indication, I’m actually going to enjoy watching the Redskins play defense this year.  Last year I just cringed and even predicted exactly when a team would take a shot down the field and easily get a big completion.  It was like clock work.  This could be a defense that makes you smile like you did when you watched the 2000 Ravens play.  London Fletcher-Baker is going through a second prime, or maybe he’s never lost it.  He’s leading the defense just like Ray Lewis anchored the Ravens in 2000.  While that image may be pretty sweet, ultimately you have to score if you want to win a game or 16.

The offense, on the hand, seems to be back to its anemic ways.  I know we haven’t seen Clinton Portis in full action, but Jason Campbell and the right side of the offensive line had a horrible showing against the Titans.  Campbell even fumbled both times he was sacked.  Todd Wade also had a rough game.  Wade is learning a new position there on the line and according to him; there is quite a learning curve.  All signs are pointing to him not playing left guard ever again.  Hopefully if Chris Samuels comes back before the regular season, things will look a little better.

The Redskins also signed veteran WR, Todd Pinkston which would make me nervous if I was Brandon Lloyd.  Lloyd has been sidelined with shin splints and honestly I’d say his position is up for grabs.  He did nothing last year to prove he deserved that starting job.  If Pinkston makes plays in the pre-season, he’s earned the spot in my book.  Anything that will let them score more than 20 points in a game will be a blessing.

I know pre-season isn’t the best way to see how a season goes, it does give a peep inside the attitude of the team going into the season.  The defense may have shown a new hunger to compete, but the offense is, well, offensive.
