Derwin's Douche of Week 8

Jim Derwin  |Oct 29,2007

52-7?  Really?  That was two "professional" teams going head to head?  The New England Patriots put a whoopin' on the Washington Redskins like few have ever seen in the NFL.  The days of parity and "Any Given Sunday," are apparently long gone.  This is a top heavy league and it's being ruled by two teams in the same conference.  The Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts are by far the best two teams in the NFL and we'll actually get an AFC Championship preview this Sunday when the two face off in Indianapolis.  I'm sure the NFL Media Machine has already started churning sub plots and storylines to build up the most hyped matchup of the season so far.  How about this for a sub plot... Bill Belichek is a douche.

Eight weeks into the 2007-08 season and a Patriot has been named a Douche of the Week three times!  It didn't have to be like this, but Bill Belichek is on a mission this season to run up the score, and piss off every opposing team fan base in the league.  I'm not a big religious person, but I do believe in Karma and the Golden Rule.  Surely if there are forces beyond our power, these actions will catch up to Belichek.  Whether it's him keeping Brady in for the last drive to score a meaningless touchdown only to see him hurt Joe Theissman style, or Wes Welker going over the middle to be flattened by a determined Free Safety.  Either way, these "Ef You" touchdowns, as ESPN Columnist Bill Simmons, calls them are giving the Patriots a black eye.

Now it is very much apparent that battle lines have been drawn and there is a definite fight between Good vs Evil when the Patriots and Colts play on Sunday.  The Colts, like it or not, are also undefeated, are the reigning Super Bowl Champs, and have easily outplayed every single one of their opponents.  One could even argue they have faced stiffer competition which would make them the favorite to win this game, all other things being equal.  Yet, while they are dismantling the other teams, at no point do you think Dungy and Manning are running up the score and beating their chest like a couple of douchebags.  Belichek could take a lesson in class from Tony Dungy.  Unfortunately, as the Colts are the only team in the NFL capable of slowing down and/or beating the Patriots, I see New England winning in convincing fashion next week.  When the Patriots do win on Sunday, I will probably once again say, Bill Belichek... you are a douche.

I'd like to take this opportunity to actually congratulate Norv Turner and the San Diego Chargers for their victory over the Houston Texans.  I'm sure it wasn't easy to focus on football last week while the players were evacuated and wondering if they would even have homes to return to.  Yet it was obvious from the opening snap the Chargers were 100% prepared for the Texans and killed them.  Since I'm taking opportunities here, you gotta see this video from the Division III Trinity University victory.  I don't care if it is D-3, this is an awesome way to end a game.
