Ducks and Sun Devils Prepare For Battle For the second week in a row, the Oregon Ducks will take part in the game of the day. Fresh off their impressive 24-17 victory over the USC Trojans last week, the Ducks welcome the undefeated Arizona State Sun Devils to Autzen Stadium in a game that has conference and national title implications.
The Ducks (7-1, 4-1 Pac 10) are led by their Heisman candidate quarterback Dennis Dixon and explosive running back Jonathan Stewart. Arizona State starting quarterback Rudy Carpenter is expected to play despite suffering a thumb injury in last week’s win over Cal. The Sun Devils (8-0, 5-0) have excelled under first year head coach Dennis Erickson. Arizona State is only one of five undefeated teams left in the country. The Sun Devils are looking to avenge last season’s 48-13 beat down in Tempe. To his credit, Erickson has established a culture of winning in a very short time. No player has benefited more from Erickson’s arrival than Carpenter.
“I’m just really having fun getting a chance to be a part of a good team and a winning and successful team. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a season like this, so it just feels good, said Carpenter. “It’s fun right now and hopefully we can keep winning.”
The Sun Devils haven’t been ranked this high since Jake Plummer was their quarterback. The matchup with the Ducks will be their toughest test of the season. The Sun Devils have won the last two meetings at Autzen Stadium. It remains to be seen if Carpenter’s thumb will hinder his play. For the Sun Devils to make it three in a row at Autzen Stadium, Carpenter must play well.
Expect the Sun Devils to put up a fight, but the combination of Dixon and Stewart will prove to be too much for Arizona State to overcome. Oregon will not face a ranked opponent the rest of the season and should run the table. The Ducks will need some help, but a trip to the BCS title game could be in their future.
