Fantasy Draft Diaries

Jim Derwin  |Aug 24,2007

Last night, the Football.com crew had their Fantasy Football draft.  The league consists of 10 teams.  9 out of 10 are managed by us fellas and one team managed by a girl.  Jeremiah was supposed to be our commissioner and he set up our league through Fox Sports.  6pm PST was the draft time and everybody except one manager was in the office ready to go.  I logged on beforehand to get ready, then low and behold the Fox Draft manager won't connect.  Then the 8 other teams tried to get on... no dice either.  So the one guy (who happens to have the #1 pick) that is drafting from home can't connect to it either.  With one fell swoop, we collectively gave Fox Sports the finger.  Murphy's freakin Law.  Chris Stout stepped up in the clutch and signed us up for a Yahoo league.  There weren't any draft times available but they have a great feature where you can draft offline then load your teams later.  Fox/MSN, I hope you read this.  Your application is a piece of dog shit and Yahoo just completely wiped the floor with you.  Yes, Yahoo.  The same company that can't raise its stock price to save its life.  Think about that for a minute then get back to me when your head is out of your ass.

 ANYWAY...

We get started with the draft.  First pick is this guy named Matt and he, unfortunately, takes LaDanian Tomlinson.  Shocker.  Next up is me and with my first pick I took Stephen Jackson.  Another Shocker.  I actually can't remember the exact draft order for everyone but this is who I drafted in the order I drafted them:

1.  Stephen Jackson
2.  Lawrence Maroney
3.  Marion Barber
4.  Edgerin James
5.  Phillip Rivers
6.  hines ward
7.  Laverneus Coles
8.  donte stallworth
9.  San Diego Defense
10.  dallas clark
11.  Alex Smith
12.  Jason Witten
13.  Seattle Defense
14.  jason elam
15.  David Akers

I'll just go ahead and state the obvious.  My RB's are phenomenal and you may as well write me into the championship game barring injuries.  Even with taking 4 straight RB's, I still was able to nab Hines Ward and Laverneus Coles as my WR's.  So my starting lineup will consist of three 1,000+ yard RB's, two 1,000+ yard WR's and a touchdown machine known as Marion Barber III.  I'd like to thank the numb nuts in the league that drafted QB's and WR's in round 2 who made this possible.  Tee hee.  I'm giddy.

Lastly, I'd like to rant about offline drafts.  This is 2007 and online fantasy football has been a staple in our lives for at least five years.  While Yahoo will keep tabs on the stats and points, when you draft offline, it's harder to keep track of who's been drafted which always creates headaches.  The biggest headache however is time limits.  Online, you have 90 seconds to draft.  If you don't select a player in 90 seconds, the system autodrafts the "best available" player.  Our #1 drafter, Matt, who also was picking via speaker phone was taking up to 5 minutes to pick his players.  Had I been commissioner, I would've been ruling with an Iron Fascist Fist and given him Mike Vrabel as his starting WR.  Everyone else in the draft that made it to draft in person was staying within the time limit.  You're already breaking a huge Man Law by not showing up to the draft, don't dig yourself deeper by taking forever to pick.  Being that he was the #1 pick he had back to back picks which drug it out even longer.  OK.  Enough about that.  I will get my revenge come game time.  Let's Go SOCIAL DERWINISM!
