Favre Shows Manning the Way

Glenn Minnis  |Sep 18,2007

Two clearly divergent roads, one of which will ultimately come to capsulize the coarse of Eli Manning's yet unchartered career, merged into a single pitstop at the Meadowlands on Sunday.

As much as the Green Bay Packers' 35-13 romp over the Giants symbolized an act of total demolition, it also served as a blueprint of what can happen when potential truly becomes production, mere training builds to polished execution, pomp and circumstance turns to legitimate leadership.

Eli Manning hooked up with Brett Favre and his entourage in Jersey, an assemblage that long ago proved to be the antithesis of what the Giants' quarterback and his mates have sadly shown themselves to be thus far this young season. Sunday's outcome crystallized that dichotomy all the more.

Forgot about the somewhat similar numbers posted by the big-arm quarterbacks. For Brett Favre's 285 yards passing, three touchdown effort was representative of the money-in-the-bank gems he's long become synonymous with in running out to the league's all-time leading mark (149) for victories.

On the other hand, Manning's 211 yards and a touchdown performance continued a puzzling pattern where his numbers often seem about as meaningful as those posted on an Enron ledger sheet a few years back.

In short, Brett Favre again distinguished himself to be what everyone seems to want to anoint Eli Manning as. But actual deed remains yards ahead of mere possibility. Hence, Favre's career win numbers and Manning's to date 8-10 run as a starter.

Eli Manning would have been wise to watch the poised precision in which Brett Favre dissected his Giants. It served as yet another road map, a blueprint illustrating what he should be striving to be and just how far he has to go to get there.

  1. Great article. The old dog is definitely showing these young guys what it means to "play" the game.
