Friday Night Lights: Mountaineers vs. Bulls The Big East Conference will have the national spotlight Friday night when the West Virginia Mountaineers travel to Tampa to take on the South Florida Bulls in a heavyweight battle. The Mountaineers are determined to avenge last season’s loss in Morgantown. Led by standout running back Steve Slaton and dual-threat quarterback Pat White, the Mountaineers will face their first serious test in their quest for the national championship.
As for South Florida, the Friday night stage provides the Bulls with an opportunity to establish itself as a legitimate national power. The Bulls are very likely the second best team in the Sunshine State behind the defending national champion Florida Gators. It is hard to believe that a program that has only been in existence for 11 years has already ascended above perennial powers Florida State and Miami.
A great deal of the credit for the Bulls meteoric rise lies with head coach Jim Leavitt. His ability to build up the program from the ground up is truly remarkable. Since their inaugural season in 1997, the Bulls have compiled a 70-43 record, including the school’s first bowl victory in the PapaJohns.com Bowl against East Carolina last year. After an impressive road win at Auburn earlier this year, the Bulls cracked the Top 25 for the first time in school history. In fact, the Bulls are expecting their first sell out of Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Simply put, times are good in Tampa. Under the direction of Leavitt, the South Florida program seems destined for greatness in the years ahead. Led by sophomore quarterback Matt Grothe the program should challenge for the conference crown on a regular basis.
That being said, Friday night’s showdown between West Virginia and South Florida promises to be a classic. Expect South Florida to ride the energy of the home crowd and push the Mountaineers to the limit. West Virginia will be up for the challenge and should pull out a close hard fought victory.
