Giants Left to Wonder

Glenn Minnis  |Sep 12,2007

Not a season does a single game make, right? One has to wonder given the clearly fragile state of the Giants in the wake of the league's opening stanza.

Is Eli still the man for the G-Men, or is he really toast for all the foreseeable future? And if the latter is true, is primary backup Jared Lorenzen enough of a talent to hold done the fort until the franchise player can make his return? For that matter, will the 6-4, 285 southpaw of a gunslinger even be disciplined enough to make weight and give himself an ample chance at pulling off the deed?

Same backfield here, different issue, the Giants were already grappling with the matter of trying to replace a legend. Now they're left to wonder if it's an even bigger deal trying to fill the shoes of his replacement.

With his right knee sprain, away limped third-year veteran Brandon Jacobs and in stepped Derrick Ward, he of all of 35 carries over his first three seasons in the league. All this as the ever loquacious Barber looks on, growing more bitterly opionated with every folly.

On defense, a term used here about as loosely as the way the team performed in Dallas, things have become about as confusing as say... trying to utter Osi Umenyiora ten straight times. The Giants star defensive end likewise bit the dust in Dig D, suffering a knee strain of his own that's expected to keep him on the sidelines for at least the next month.

Umenyiora's injury becomes all the more complicated when one considers it's still a fair question to ask if the team began the season a man short along the line given the seemingly lukewarm commitment of Johnny-Come-Lately sackmaster Michael Strahan.

It's all been enough to make Tom Coughlin act like, well, Tom Coughlin. The oft sullen Giants' coach sulked and wailed his way all the way from Texas back to the Meadowlands following Sunday's night debacle. And he's still going.

Hey Tom, take a chill pill. Not a season does a single game make, right?
