Hurricanes Blow Away Aggies The Miami Hurricanes completely outplayed the #20 Texas A&M Aggies 34-17 in front of a raucous crowd at the Orange Bowl on Thursday night. The nationally televised beat down was rookie head coach Randy Shannon ’s first signature victory with the Hurricanes. With the victory, Miami improved to 10-0 on Thursday nights at the Orange Bowl since 1986. I’m kicking myself for not putting some dough on the Canes.
The offense was led by the efficient play of quarterback Kyle Wright , who threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns. His primary receiving target was Sam Shields , who pulled down six catches for 117 yards. Graig Cooper and Jarvoris James powered the ground game, each scoring on a touchdown. Cooper also caught a touchdown pass.
Not to be outdone, the Hurricanes defense manhandled one of the better offenses in the country. Coming into the game, the Aggies were averaging 46.3 points per game. The Aggies were unable to run the ball effectively against the Canes’ stout defense. Miami held Texas A&M to only 38 yards of offense in the first half. Heading into the locker room, the Hurricanes were up 24-0 and the game was essentially over.
The Aggies were finally able to put some points up in the fourth quarter but the game was well in hand at that point. Miami quarterback Kyle Wright seemed quite pleased with his team’s performance.
“I think this is something that’s going to get us on a roll. It kind of got our confidence back up,” Wright said.
Next up on the schedule for Miami are the Duke Blue Devils , who finally ended their nation long 22 game losing streak last week with an upset victory at Northwestern . Don’t count on Duke winning two in a row. Miami should have little trouble with the Blue Devils. Shannon and company will soon be challenged by a vicious road schedule. Road games at rival Florida State, Virginia Tech and Boston College will determine whether the U is ready to assert itself as one of the elite programs in the country once again.
The win over the Aggies was the final Thursday night game to be played at the Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes will move to Dolphins Stadium next season. The Canes’ performance against the Aggies was indicative of the manner in which Miami has historically dominated their home field.
