It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Jim Derwin  |Aug 23,2007

(Lyrics by Steve Wariner)

It's the most wonderful time of the year.
With the kids jingle belling,
and everyone telling you,
"Be of good cheer,"
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

No, I'm not talking about Christmas, Hannukah, or Kwanzaa.  The NFL pre-season is nearing its end and it's almost time for the regular season kickoff.  What else does that mean?  It's Fantasy Football draft time ladies and gents!  There are several sporting events that get me as giddy as a school girl with velcro panties.  The first weekend of March Madness is one.  NFL playoffs are another.  But something about Fantasy Football Draft Day makes me excited, nervous, tense, and fired up all rolled into one.

Today, August 23rd, is the Football.com draft.  All of us writers and a few others on staff are going to pile into an office, eat some pizza, drink some beer, and talk a lot of trash.  I've got the #2 pick in this year's draft.  I've never had such a high pick before.  I'm pretty much dead set on selecting Stephen Jackson with my first pick, yet a part of me hopes the guy with the #1 pick has a brain fart and passes on LaDainian.  I know it's a stretch but stranger things have happened, right?  I don't know what I'd do if I had LDT on my team.  When you have him, you are just so spoiled.  It's like dating a supermodel that can cook, debate sports, and scratches her ass when it itches or just because.  Stephen Jackson, however, isn't that much worse.  As long as he's healthy he'd be like dating a B-list celebrity that can get you into the best Hollywood parties and invite girls back to her place for 3-ways (I'm kidding mom.  I'd never do that).

Being that we haven't had the draft yet, I don't want to go fully into my strategy but I think it is fair to say my first picks are going to be spent on running backs.  Once I'm confident in my RB corps I'll look for the best available QB.  You see, I think the difference between the elite backs and a #2 back compared to the difference between a Peyton Manning and Drew Brees is huge.  Peyton is the best QB available but, points-wise, he's not much better than Brees, Bulger, or McNabb.  Whereas if I had a starting RB rotation of Jackson, McGahee, and say Jones-Drew, now that's intimidating.

I'll post my draft results on Friday when I've sobered up and will give a player by player analysis on why I picked them and why I selected them in that particular round.  Until then, wish me luck.
