Time to Walk Away Trent

Time to Walk Away Trent It’s time for Trent Green to hang it up. The Miami Dolphins veteran signal caller suffered his latest concussion in the Dolphins 22-19 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 5. At age 37, Green is already on the downside of his career. Combine that with the fact that his team is terrible and headed nowhere fast, one can only conclude that Green has likely played his last NFL game. Of course, if it were left up to Green, he would be back on the field this Sunday when the Dolphins host the undefeated New England Patriots.
“I would like to play again,” Green said. “It’s what I love doing. It remains to be seen whether they will clear me.”
The decision to clear Green is in the hands of his doctors. While his test results have been normal, the long-term effects of his latest severe concussion are unknown. Green is determined to seek further medical advice before arriving at a decision.
The Dolphins are in no hurry to rush Green back. In fact, it is the franchise’s best interest to part ties with Green and look to the future. The team is 0-6 and just traded their best receiver Chris Chambers to the San Diego Chargers. Rookie John Beck, who the Phins drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft, deserves an opportunity to lead the team under center.
Green would be wise to follow the lead of former NFL greats Troy Aikman and Steve Young. Both had their illustrious careers cut short by concussions. Aikman and Young have both excelled as analysts.
Hopefully, the doctors make the decision easy for Green and encourage him to retire. Green is married with three children and has a promising broadcast career ahead of him. That’s a pretty good fall back plan.
