Boston College safety Jamie Silva may not be imposing in terms of size but he is adept in run support and is a player to keep an eye on as the 2008 NFL Draft draws closer. Silva spoke to the media at the recent NFL Combine
Your workouts get you ready?
I've been working out since the bowl game, it’s helped me, we go six days a week so I’m ready to do the stuff.
Did you follow the Patriots growing up?
Yes I did, I did follow the Patriots since they were the team right there.
Talk with Pats? Yeah, I talked to them when I was at the east west game and had some good conversations.
What did they say?
They just said what they like and just it’s a long process, finish out, do well in the East-West game, and come here and do well and do well in indiv workouts.
I feel like I can contribute wherever I go, I haven’t thought of one specific team, I'm just hoping that one team takes me and gives me the opportunity to get on the field.
Having a high school running backbackground help?
Um…yeah you could say that, also ball skills, I feel that playing on offense helps that.
Was Boston College the only D-I option?
I wasn’t too heavily recruited out of Rhode Island, not too many guys go Division-1 and the last few weeks before signing day BC came through with the offer, and then when Indiana heard, Indiana came through too so those were my only two.
Did that give you a chip on your shoulder?
Not because of it, I felt like I belonged at the Division-1 level; I just wanted to prove to myself more than to everyone else, I just felt like if I went out and did what I could that it would show everybody else that I belonged here.
Biggest myth about your game?
I mean, some people say I’m too small, and I think that’s kind of ridiculous – there’s plenty of safeties in the NFL seem my size or even smaller. I mean Bob Sanders was NFL (defensive) MVP and he’s probably smaller than mostly everybody here.
Are some guys better in pads than shorts?
Definitely. I think my strong suit would be putting the pads on and playing football…I play football, I don’t run track, I’m not going into weightlifting competitions, as Mr. Polian said the other day when he gave us an orientation, we are football players, we’re not track guys and that’s how I feel as well. I feel like my strengths will be seen once I get onto the field.
On punt returning last year
I enjoyed returning punts a lot this year, it was fun to get back there and get the ball in your hands again like it was high school. It was fun.
On the other Boston College players at the combine
Yeah, we’re all close and I’m sure we’ll stay close over the years to come and we’re proud of each other and proud of how BC did the last couple years being the most-winningest class in BC history.
Did you get out from under radar this year, especially after East-West?
I feel I got the recognition this year as far as the accolades I received and stuff but I mean, I felt like I played alright in the east west game, I didn’t feel like I had one of my better games. I know it was an all-star game but after every game I always go back… I never feel like I’ve played a great game just because I know I missed a tackle or didn’t pick off a pass I could’ve, things like that.
If not BC or IU, where?
I was going to go to Brown or UPenn.
I just want to make a team, make a roster and once I get on the field and once I get on a team I’d like to obviously contribute and you know I feel like I can be out there playing on Sundays and I want to be on the field so obviously I’d like to be one of the starters, but people work threir way into that role, and that’s where I’d like to get to. I’d just want to make a team and play and contribute and make my team better.
Ever talk to Will Blackmon?
I talk to him sometimes, he’s the one guy from rhode island that played high school football.
On his pretty hair
Ever since high school I’ve had it long and it seems like once every 20 months. I shave it off one night and let it grow back. I’m due to shave it.
