McNabb Wins, Even as Philly Falls

In the end, Donovan McNabb's ultimate wait to exhale didn't take very long. At 6:01 of the second quarter against Brett Favre and Green Bay, the Eagles star quarterback pulled off the one feat he's longed to most over the last ten months.

McNabb's 9-yard scoring toss to reserve wideout Jason Avant forged much more than a 10-10 score at Lambeau Field. It pieced back together what for the last 300 or so days has been a broken heart. For McNabb had waited for that moment since being carted off the field in Philadelphia last November for what would be his third season-ending surgery over the last five years.

And essentially he began working toward it in those same dwindling seconds. No, perhaps not always on a physical level, but since that instance his mind has seldom allowed him to rest. And always Donovan McNabb would see himself as he did on Sunday at Lambeau. Competing, thrilling, leading.

In all of those glimpses, true sports fans everywhere, rather they bleed Philly green or not, cheered with him. For they realized that in terms of skill, substance and style, athletes of Donovan McNabb's ilk rarely come around anymore. And the onus is upon diehards, one and all, to pay homage to a dieing breed.

And so, to see him take the field in Green Bay on Sunday, only months after more than a few know-it-all pundits had all but predicted he might never do so again, should have mended far more hearts than just Donovan McNabbs.

The Eagles' 16-13 loss to the Packers, you ask? Inconsequential, Donovan McNabb had already showed us all how to win.
