New Mexico Shuts Out Nevada 23-0 to Snap Bowl Streak
Finally! The New Mexico Lobos earned their first bowl victory since the 1961 Aviation Bowl with their dominating 23-0 performance against the Nevada Wolfpack in the New Mexico Bowl.

The Lobos offense was clicking on all cylinders. Quarterback Donavan Porterie threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns and running back Paul Baker ran for 167 yards on 22 carries. Wide receiver Travis Brown hauled in seven catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. New Mexico took a 20-0 lead into halftime.

It was the team’s first bowl victory in five tries under head coach Rocky Long.

“It gets it off our back. We don’t have to listen to it anymore,” said Long. “But this program was good before we won today.”

A great deal of the credit for the Lobos victory goes to the defense. Coming into the game, Nevada was averaging 36.2 points per game and nearly 500 yards of total offense. In fact, Nevada had not been shut out since 1980. That’s 329 games, which was the longest current streak in college football. Hall of Fame Nevada head coach Chris Ault gave credit where credit is due.

“It’s certainly a compliment to their defense. They played a great game,” Ault said. “At the other end of the spectrum, we played as poorly on offense as we’ve played in a long time.”

Nevada managed only 210 yards of offense and 12 first downs in four quarters of football.
