Niners Stink It Up on Monday Night Wow, the 49ers are bad. The team can’t move the ball at all. In Monday’s 24-0 shutout loss in Seattle, the 49ers put on one of the weakest offensive displays of the year. It was tough to watch. I feel bad for 49er fans everywhere -- and anyone else who had to sit through that game.
Leading into the game, the story was this: If the Niners could find a way to win, the team would move to 3-7 and be just one game out of first place in the sorry NFC West.
Well, the Niners couldn’t put up a single point. It’s like Emmitt Smith said after the game, “the NFC West is probably the weakest…(pause) conference in the whole NFC.”That’s right – this is the weakest conference in the entire conference. Watching this division is just painful.
Steve Young wasn’t liking what he was seeing one bit. Neither was Ron Jaworski.Large portions of the Monday Night Football broadcast featured commentary about what it takes to be an elite quarterback in the NFL. It was clear that no one in the booth thought that Alex Smith could hang.
Smith was pressured all night long. He was hurried, sacked three times and he was just out of sync the whole game. Smith fumbled twice after getting hit. He had no time to throw the ball, and when he did have time, he held on to the ball too long.
Smith finished the game 12 for 28 with 114 passing yards and no touchdowns. He never looked comfortable or competent in the pocket.
Seattle looked like a dominant team, but again, they were playing the 49ers. Running back Shaun Alexander was out of the mix and Maurice Morris filled in nicely. Matt “Lex Luther” Hasselbeck threw for 278 yards two touchdowns and an interception. He looked poised and productive throughout the entire game. Seattle’s defense turned in a fine performance as well.
So, the San Francisco 49ers lost. The team won’t be harboring any delusions about a division title. The Seahawks on the other hand looked primed for a playoff run. The same team that got shutout by the Steelers on Oct.7th could still do some serious damage in the watered down NFC. Like Emmit Smith said, this is the weakest conference in the whole conference. Seattle should comfortably coast to their fourth straight NFC West title.
