Purdue defensive ends have a recent history of projecting well as outside linebackers at the pro level. Just ask the Chargers (Shaun Phillips) and Cowboys (Anthony Spencer) I don’t think they will argue
the point. Cliff Avril looks to be the next Purdue athlete mentioned in this company.

*Strengths:* Versatility
*Weaknesses:* Upper body strength
*Statline:* 125 tackles with 30 for loss and 12.5 sacks over the last
two seasons.
*Technique:* Is a valuable player because not only does he have experience at defensive end and linebacker, he seems to know the nuances of both positions and what adjustments to make.
*Known Injuries:* No major injuries while attending Purdue.
*Combine / Workout Assessment*: 4.52 40 yard dash with 6.90 3-cone drill and 36.5 inch vertical leap.
*DJ Boyer's Analysis:* Cliff Avril needs to show improvement with his footwork at the next level whether he is playing outside linebacker or defensive end in the NFL. That seems to be the only real knock on him because while he also needs to get stronger he has shown improvement in that area and that will come once he is drafted and gets to camp. Avril has the aptitude to play both positions and has the frame to add weight if he will primarily be a defensive end. The fact that Avril showed a quick burst off the line throughout his college career and 4.52 speed in the 40 shows that even if he loses a little ebit of speed as an end he is in good shape. Avril will be looked at by teams that employ a 3-4
base that want him to play outside linebacker or teams that have a general need at linebacker and end and he can audition to play both positions. Teams like The New York Jets and New England Patriots have been clamoring heavily for his services and he is a name that could even sneak into the first round. Great teammate and a joy to coach by all accounts, off the field concerns will not apply with Avril.
