Player Spotlight; Derrick Harvey

DJ Boyer  |Apr 07,2008
Those undersized Florida defensive ends have always been a hot commodity in NFL circles but one man trying to dispel that is Derrick Harvey. Harvey has added some girth since the season and is out to prove he is more than just a pass rushing specialist.

*Derrick Harvey Defensive End Florida*
Junior ,6-5, 270

*Strengths:* Beating double teams
*Weaknesses:* Consistency

*Statline:* 49 tackles with 17 for loss and 8.5 sacks in 2007.

*Technique:* plays the run well for a guy known primarily as a pass rusher. Good footwork and improved upper body strength make him one of the better ends at beating double teams.

*Known Injuries:* No major injuries to speak of, has had some minor injury problems in the past with both ankles.

*Combine / Workout Assessment: *4.84 4-yard dash and 31 reps at 225 pound in the bench press.**

*DJ Boyer's Analysis:* Derrick Harvey played between 252 – 256 for most of his sophomore and junior seasons at Florida but added 15 pounds of weight after the season and weighed in at 271 at both the Combine and his private workout. 4.84 40-yard dash time might be seen as a little bit alarming but he is by no means slow as his impressive 4.36 shuttle time indicates. Very fast off the line and changes directions well, because of this more teams do see him as a true defensive end vice a linebacker. Has the upper body strength to be a consistent defensive end but consistency is what seems to have plagued him at Florida. Has impressive statistics and has been productive but we have also seen
Harvey disappear from long stretches of games. This is frustrating especially since he has beaten double teams with ease on a number of occasions. Has done a better job at bending his knees and getting under linemans pads. Has long arms and can disrupt passing lanes. 8.5 sacks is a good number but he had nearly 30 quarterback pressures on the year so he was a disruptive force. Harvey should be a late pick in the first round who will need help with polishing his game and being more consistent.
