Player Spotlight; Martellus Bennett

DJ Boyer  |Feb 03,2008

When it comes to pure athletic ability at the tight end position Bennett is second to none in this draft. He will be drafted based more upon upside than production as he has seen his numbers increase every season at Texas A&M and played on the basketball team during his freshman and sophomore seasons.

*Martellus Bennett, Tight End, Texas A&M*
Junior, 6-7, 250

*Strengths:* Hands
*Weaknesses:* Consistency as a blocker

*Statline:* 49 catches for 587 yards and 4 touchdowns in his last season at Texas A&M.

*Technique:* May be the first tight end off the board because he has the catching/blocking upside many teams are looking for in a complete tight end. Continues to get better and better, a lot of upside as it seems the best from Bennett is yet to come.

*Known Injuries:* Minor injuries to ankle and foot but nothing major at Texas A&M.

*Combine / Workout Assessment:* Coming Soon.

*DJ Boyer's Analysis:* If any tight end goes in the first round of this draft it could be Bennett who hasn’t established the consistency yet as a blocker but has all the tools and shows you glimpses that he can not only be a good blocker in the future but a dominating one. Best hands of any tight end in this draft so he could be a red zone threat who scores a lot of touchdowns but won’t see the huge pass reception numbers. Athletic ability is showcased by his two years on the Texas A&M nationally ranked basketball team where he was a reserve forward who handled the ball well in traffic, similar to how he plays on the football field. For a man his size he doesn’t need a lot of room to operate or to get open. Works just as well in tight spaces as he does in the open field. Should gain a little weight for life in the NFL but has played heavier at Texas A7M in both sports so this shouldn’t be a problem. Has shown the propensity to disappear during stretches of games and can be easily frustrated. Will have to maintain composure and become more consistent at the NFL level. Could be one of the stars at the Combine if he chooses to workout, has an amazing natural runners stride for a man of his height.
