Player Spotlight; Martin Rucker

DJ Boyer  |Feb 05,2008

This looks like a weak tight end class overall and Rucker was at the top of virtually every board coming into the year but not many people knew about him. With the amazing 2-loss season that Missouri had Rucker became a household name and solidified his spot at the top of the tight end charts for the 2008 Draft.

*Martin Rucker, Tight End, Missouri*
Senior, 6-5, 250

*Strengths:* Body control and adjustments
*Weaknesses:* Pass protection

*Statline:* 84 catches for 834 yards and 8 touchdowns as a senior.

*Technique:* Very athletic player with above-average route running skills. Will work best in two-tight end sets as the pass receiving threat.

*Known Injuries:* Battles an injured foot and heal as a junior but no major injuries at Missouri.

*Combine / Workout Assessment*: Coming Soon.

*DJ Boyer Analysis* Rucker is the best pure pass receiving threat available in this draft but doesn’t look like a first round prospect at this time. Younger brother of Carolina Panther Mike Rucker and his father Martin is a member of the House of Representatives so he and his family are well accustomed to success. The breakout year Chase Daniels and Missouri had came at the perfect time to showcase his abilities as a senior. Moves well for a man his size and has very long arms to go with an average 6-5 build for a tight end. Moves well in the open field and is helpful as a run blocker where he chips and uses his quick footwork to gain leverage. Cannot hold up as a consistent pass blocker at the point of attack and will be effective in systems where his team will use two tight ends and have Rucker act as the main pass receiving threat. If Rucker goes to a team with an established tight end in front of him he could help out on Special teams, was voted Missouri’s special teams standout player as a sophomore when he broke out as a tight end. Stock was helped at the Senior Bowl where he showed the ability to showcase big play ability and go deep, not the traditional dink-and dunk style that Missouri liked to utilize. Looks like he is a in a battle with Texas A&M underclassman Martellus Bennett to be the first tight end
chosen in 2008.
