Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid's season on the brink just keeps on sliding to lower depths. In the last week alone, Reid has been humbled in a way every parent prays not to be, then humiliated as no Eagles' coach has been in recent decades. In the case of the embattled coach's personal life, a judge sentenced sons Garrett, 24, and Britt, 22, to up to 23-months in prison each on an array of varying drug charges last Thursday. By Sunday, following a 38-17 home loss to the despised Dallas Cowboys, the verdict concerning the prospects for the rest of his slumping team's season seemed almost as sobering. Clearly Andy Reid is faced with two dire situations here, one at home and the other in the workplace that has served as a sanctuary for him over the last nine years. In either domain, they'll be no rest for the weary. In Philadelphia, home to a fan base so rabid they once booed Santa Claus, hardened Eagles' followers have started to openly question if their chief priorities could possibly be the same as those of Reid the father during this most critical juncture. Simply put, the Eagles sit at 3-5, and the restless natives are out for blood. Thus, nine-years, four consecutive NFC championship game appearances and a career .621 winning percentage in, Andy Reid's loyalty, commitment and expertise are all now being called into question. But then what would expect given that there's also clamoring for the ouster of star quarterback Donovan McNabb, the only other man this side of Brian Dawkins, William Thomas and David Akers to have accompanied Reid on his entire ride? For his part, Andy Reid is hanging tough, refusing to answer more questions about his personal life and offering clear and direct responses as to his plans to remain in charge of the only team he has filled the role of head coach for. Given all Andy Reid has done for the Eagles, done for the city of Philadelphia and the game of football, one would hope that would be enough.
