Social D & The Shark's Fantasy Corner - Week 3

Jeremiah O. Sarkett  |Sep 21,2007

OK Shark, here we go again.

You gave me a good drummin last week 114-74 thanks
once again to Tony Romo, and this time to your boy
Chad Johnson.  Who saw a 51-45 shootout in Cleveland
coming?  Especially with Derek Anderson at the helm.
I'd still hold off on anyone picking him up.  I fully
think last Sunday was a fluke, and he'll never come
close to that performance again.  Unless he's still QB
when Cleveland plays Cincy again.  Larry Johnson once
again was a disappointment for you.  Not to worry,
because Stephen Jackson once again let me down.  It's
interesting to note that the top 4 picks in fantasy
leagues everywhere went in this order or probably
consisted of LDT, Stephen Jackson, Frank Gore, and LJ.
Out of all of them, Gore is the only one that has
done anything.  Edgerrin James (who I picked up in
round 5 mind you) is the top fantasy back so far.

This week I'm playing big Tommy Morris, aka Tommy's
Guns.  He's sitting at 1-1, and I'm at 0-2 like nine
other NFL teams.  My only solace is the Skins are 2-0.
Tommy has a decent team but is definitely beatable.
Brian Westbrook and Torry Holt are his main bread
winners.  Take a look at the matchup Shark and tell me
what you would do.

I see you're facing off against Matt "Two Times"
Tuens, aka Crush Force Hammer.  That will be a tough
match for you.  CFH may be 1-1 to your 2-0, but Tuens
has put up 235 points in two weeks.  Pretty
impressive.  That's even without LDT contributing
much.  He took a chance on drafting Randy Moss and boy
has that paid off for him.  That might be the steal of
our draft so far.

First off, Romo has been stellar for you, but this
will be his toughest week yet against the Bears.  No
QB has done well fantasy-wise against that Bears
defense.  I'd give Jay Cutler a try going against
Jacksonville.  The Jags have a great D as well, but I
think Cutler will fare a little better.  At receiver,
you gotta keep Chad Johnson in there, regardless who
the Bengals play.  After Johnson, you have some tough
decisions to make.  Braylon Edwards against the
Baltimore defense, Vincent Jackson against Green Bay,
and Brandon Marshall against Jacksonville.  I'd
probably take a gamble and play Brandon Marshall.  You
have Cutler as your QB, so you can double your
touchdown points if Cutler finds Marshall in the end
zone.  At Running back, I think your best bests are
LJ, Adrian Peterson, then putting Ronnie Brown in your
flex spot over Deuce.  Maybe I was wrong about Sean
Payton.  He hasn't gotten it yet.  Deuce is a freak
and can bulldoze over defenses.  Why he keeps trying
to outrun defenses, which have gotten obscenely fast
these days, is beyond me.

Since you only have one TE, Ben Watson, and one
Kicker, Neil Rackers, you gotta play them.  Both have
been good to you anyway.  What you need to address is
your defense man.  Cincinatti?  Check that waiver wire
and see if San Fran's D is still available.  I'd give
them the award for most improved defense if not for
Houston's glaring improvement.  If not for the Niners'
D this year, they'd be 0-2, because Alex Smith and
their offense has been awful.  I know.  I just dropped
that mofo Smith and picked up Jeff Garcia off waivers.

Hit me back Shark.  Let me hear the 2-0 fantasy
wizzard speak!

------------------------------------------------------

Social D,

Yea, that Cincy, Cleveland game was wild last Sunday and Chad's 35 plus
points are what did you in really. Derek Anderson did have his best game,
maybe ever and you are totally correct, we won't see that again from the
Browns this year, we'll, until they play Cincy again, lol. Yea, Larry has
really been hurting me bro and he has the Vikings and their stout defense
again this week. I really need LJ to bust out this week and get back on track.
Right now, Deuce is in and will be evaluated further and may I may ultimately
go back with Ronnie Brown as Chatman is beat up right now and Brown should
see about 6 more attempts because of this... I will
more than likely sit both Cutler and Marshall this week- I am not
intimidated by the Bears defense and I don't think Romo is either. The
Dallas offense has been nearly unstoppable and if they fall behind, Romo
will be passing all game.

Let's get onto you and your team this week. I am pulling all the right
moves (minus the Cincy defense last week, wtf) and would like to see you get
in the win column brotha. You have a sweet team on paper, but on Any Given
Sunday... Garcia was a great pick up as you were getting hurt each week by
your quarterbacks.... Rivers SHOULD come around but who wants to wait for
that, it could be like week 4 or 5? Jeff should give you a decent 15-25
points per week but what scares me is the Tampa offensive line is sooo
young and what happens when Garcia throws up that 5 or 8 point game, can you
afford any more of those from your quarterback position? Have you
thought about dealing one of your running backs to shore up your quarterback
position? What will help you though is Tampa may be down and passing a
lot to come back, so let's see what Garcia can do for you here this week...

Here is one move that I think will pay off for you this week. Dallas
Clark vs. the Texans- Witten will be flagged all game by the sick Bears'
linebackers, where the Texans will try and shut Harrison and Wayne out
and leave Clark to roam free for Peyton... I see Clark with at least 50
yards and one touchdown. Game time decision also, the Edge for Maroney. The
Bills defense is much better than advertised and you know that Sammy Morris
is the goal line back in NE right now and that should be a concern for you.
Wow, Maroney was so hyped this year and right now, the Pats are all pass and
all about the 50/50 split with him and Morris. The Edge should find the end
zone against the Ravens and ramble for at least a fifty spot, I am not sure
that you'll get the TD from Maroney- game time decision, right now, I'd say
Edge as he is the only guy in Az and will get the goal line touches
brotha...  Pulling for you this week, it will be a good matchup- if Tommy gets
good play from Vince, it could be another long day for you hoss? You need SJ
to come out big this week like I need LJ too....

The wizard has spoken- think about a trade to bolster your quarterback
and receiver spots and look very seriously at the Edge and Dallas Clark
this week. Hell, Clark could give you two scores and a hundred yards easy
this week Social!

The Shark

------------------------------------------------------------------

Shark,

No doubt my QBs are sucktastic.  That's why I had to
get rid of Alex Smith.  The Niners should do the same
thing and bring back Tim Rattay.  Had I had Garcia and
started Dallas Clark instead of Witten last week, I
would've had you.  But that's fantasy for you...
shoulda, coulda, woulda!

Thanks for your tips for this week.  I do plan on
starting the Edge over Maroney.  Watch Brady will hand
the ball off to Maroney 30 times just to spite me.  I
hate that effing guy.

So let's talk about who we like and who we don't to
have big games this week.  Here's my list of players I
expect to explode broken out by position:

QB
Peyton Manning
Carson Palmer
Jason Campbell (week 3 sleeper special)
Tom Brady
Marc Bulger

RB
Joseph Addai
Chris Brown
Clinton Portis
Adrian Peterson - your boy
LDT
Shaun Alexander

WR
Randy Moss
Antwan Randle-El
Santana Moss - See a theme w/ the Skins?
Steve Smith
Anyone on the Colts
Torry Holt
Roy Williams
Wes Welker

TE
Dallas Clark
Heath Miller
Chris Cooley
Ben Watson

Shark- lay down your Occlumency skills and let the
people know who to stay away from this week.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Stay Away From:

QB

Brett Favre vs. San Diego- Favre has been looking really good but with
the Chargers coming to town, this Sunday will be a different story. This
game is going to feature tons of defense and will be very low scoring. Favre
may have two TDs but he will also have a few interceptions and maybe a
fumble or two. Go with Favre if you are not hit hard with negative interception
points but if you have another valued quarterback, I'd start him this week. I
would like to see Favre come out with another super game but San Diego is
just pumped this week after another disappointing performance- they are
looking to prove something Sunday in Green Bay.

Phillip Rivers at Green Bay- I would avoid playing either of the
quarterbacks in this matchup. Rivers has been just horrid the first
three games and with the Chargers needing to get the run game going, look for
fewer passing attempts, especially around the red zone. With the
offense struggling, Rivers is a gamble I'd avoid for now.

Jeff Garcia vs. St. Louis- Garcia played a very weak Saints defense
last week and that is the main reason we saw a huge output from Jeffrey. He
is a stretch to start this week despite a middle of the road matchup against
the Rams. I do see his value increasing as the season progresses but I
don't see three touchdowns this week from Garcia.

Matt Schaub vs. Indianapolis- With Bob Sanders in the lineup, the
Colts defense is a tough nut to crack and with Andre Johnson side lined,
Schaub has lost his favorite weapon in the passing game. Schaub may not even
find the end zone Sunday without Johnson. Without his ace, Schaub's stock
falls considerably.

RB

Marshawn Lynch at New England- Lynch has looked impressive to start
the 2007 campaign but this week Lynch is a risk. The New England defense
has shown on several occasions that they are one of the best overall
defensive and run stopping units in the league. The Bills should find themselves
down early and that means less running attempts for Lynch also.

Reggie Bush vs. Tennessee- Reggie, like Maurice Jones-Drew is having a
severe case of the 'sophomore slump' and with Sean Peyton knowing he
needs to pound the ball more, look for him to get Deuce going early and to
use Bush more in the slot and flanker positions. Bush may just break out at
home on MNF and get in the end zone but anything more than that should be a
stretch this week. I'd sit Bush if you have a solid third option until
he proves himself and gets going a bit more.

Laurence Maroney vs. Buffalo- Maroney was so hyped-up this summer that
many fantasy owners snagged the second year running back in the first round
of their fantasy drafts. I don't want to say I told you so but I have too.
I knew that the Patriots were a little worried about the off season
shoulder surgery and would try and rest him early in the season... The Patriots
love there 50/50 split with Maroney and Sammy Morris right now and with
Morris getting the goal line touches this means that Maroney's value has
fallen off the table. He's a solid three but won't be a number two or one until
later this year- can you afford to be patient with him?

Warrick Dunn vs. Carolina- Dunn did find the end zone last week but
has been averaging only 50 yards a game and with younger and more durable
Jerrius Norwood waiting in the wings, Dunn's carries will continue to
decrease, unless he puts up some bigger numbers. Thankfully for Dunn
owners, Norwood has gotten off to a slow start but look for Atlanta to
give the young buck some more carries this week and next.

WR

Anquan Boldin/Larry Fitzgerald at Baltimore- These guys are usually
never taken out of my lineup, we'll rarely but this week is one of those
weeks where the two big guns from the Cardinals will get shut down. Chris
McAlister will handle Boldin and Samari Rolle will shadow Fitzy. Yes
the two Cardinal receivers should be able to find some room but the big
question is how are they going to get the ball? Leinart will be running for his
life this week against the Ravens defense.

Darrel Jackson at Pittsburg- Jackson has been a big-time disappointment
thus far and with the passing game struggling in San Francisco look for this
trend to continue- especially against the stout Pittsburg defense.
Jackson has tons of upside but with Alex Smith and the passing game struggling,
Jackson is not much better than a third option, at least right now.

San Diego Receivers at Green Bay- The passing game is struggling and
with Gates and Tomlinson getting the majority of the looks from Rivers, I
would be very hesitant to start ANY Sand Diego receivers until the offense
picks up, especially against a very sound Green Bay defensive unit this week.

Lee Evans at New England- Evans is another major disappointment for
fantasy owners. Like Jackson, there is tons of potential here but the offensive
game plan and passing game is not yet up to par in Buffalo and with a stingy
Patriot defense this week, don't look for Evans to bust out just yet.
Evans has only four receptions and 22 yards thus far in 2007, ouch!

Hey brotha, good luck this weekend, your team is much better than 0-2,
let'ssee if you can get on the board this week and get a complete game from
your squad?! I will be curious to see if you take my advice and make some
moves here that could possibly turn things around and save your season? You
are not hurting yet but an 0-3 start is a recipe for disaster Jimbo!
